What makes Rahway's automation story urgent is the collision of two forces. First, this is a small, dense city where commercial rents, property taxes, and New Jersey's rising minimum wage, now $15.92 an hour as of January 2026, squeeze the margins of every independently owned restaurant, salon, medical practice, and professional office along St.

Georges Avenue, Irving Street, and the downtown Arts District. Second, Rahway is in the middle of one of the most ambitious downtown revitalization efforts in Union County.

Since the late 1990s the city has rebuilt its downtown around the arts, reopening the historic Rahway Theatre as the Union County Performing Arts Center and designating a downtown Special Improvement District through the Rahway Arts and Business Partnership.

More than 15 major transit-oriented development projects have been built or are underway within a half-mile of the train station, and the Rahway Town Center Master Plan envisions a new public square framed by City Hall, the library, and the recreation center.
