County wide, manufacturing has not gone away, it has reinvented itself. Catawba County counts 412 manufacturers employing more than 23,000 workers, a remarkable concentration for a county of its size, and manufacturing still accounts for roughly 38 percent of Newton's own employment base, according to Census occupational data.

Businesses in Newton are not struggling to find work, Catawba County's economic development office has spent a decade recruiting high tech manufacturing and data infrastructure investment into the county, and it has worked.

What local employers are struggling to find is enough people to run the phones, the scheduling, the order intake, and the back office paperwork that keep a lean manufacturing floor or a small professional office moving.

Housing costs in Newton have jumped double digits year over year even as the town remains 11 percent below the national cost of living average, which means every dollar spent on repetitive administrative work is a dollar not going toward wages that keep pace with a rising cost of living.
