Tomball, Texas sits at the intersection of Highway 249 and FM 2920 in northwest Harris and southern Montgomery counties, a small city with an outsized commercial footprint.

The city proper counted 12,309 residents in the 2020 census and has since grown to an estimated 16,471, a jump of nearly 34 percent in just a few years as the Highway 249 corridor absorbs spillover growth from the broader Houston metro.

Median household income sits at $78,562, ahead of both the Houston metro average and the statewide figure, while the median home price of $356,187 still undercuts much of west Houston and The Woodlands, which is part of what keeps drawing new residents and new employers north on 249.

Tomball's economy was built on oil.

The Tomball oil field, discovered by Humble Oil in 1933, turned a farming and railroad town into an energy company town almost overnight, and that legacy still shows up today in the cluster of oilfield services, equipment, and engineering firms scattered around the city and along the Highway 249 energy corridor toward the broader Houston-area oil and gas complex.

Decades later, Hewlett-Packard's campus in Tomball became one of the city's largest private employers, anchoring a shift toward advanced manufacturing and technology assembly that the Tomball Business and Technology Park has continued to build on.

That 99.5-acre park, developed and marketed by the Tomball EDC, has drawn over $47 million in capital investment and more than 560,000 square feet of new construction, and it was recently ranked among the top ten industrial parks in the country.

Healthcare has grown into its own economic pillar too, anchored by HCA Houston Healthcare Tomball, a 350-bed acute care hospital with a Level III trauma center and Level II NICU that draws patients from well beyond city limits and employs specialists, technicians, and administrative staff by the hundreds.
